Artur Dmitriev Jr. was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He was not initially interested in skating but began skating seriously at about the age of seven or eight after his family had moved to Hackensack, New Jersey.[4][5] He spent seven years in the U.S. and then his family moved back to Saint Petersburg where he eventually began training with Alexei Mishin at the Yubileyny rink.[4]
At the 2010 World Junior Championships, Dmitriev was the only skater to land a quad toe loop in the long program, which he did in combination with a double toe.[4] He rose from 15th after the short program to finish 7th overall. He continued to work on his quads and practiced a quad salchow and loop in May 2010 but was hampered by back problems during the 2010-2011 season.[4] In late 2010, Dmitriev left coach Mishin and Saint Petersburg to train in Moscow with Elena Vodorezova (Buianova).[6][5]
Dmitriev is the son of two-time Olympic champion pair skater Artur Dmitriev and rhythmic gymnastics World champion Tatiana Druchinina, who divorced in 2006. He was initially more interested in car racing. He speaks Russian and English but struggled with Russian grammar due to living in the U.S. for seven years.[5] He briefly considered switching his name from Artur to Artiom, his baptismal name.[4] He also has a half-brother by that name from his father's second marriage.
